I AM A LOOKING TO GO

Applying to residency is challenging. What is often viewed as the most critical transition point in a physician’s career is fraught with anxiety, cost and uncertainty. Candidates are presented with a number of choices with limited insight into the process. “How many programs should I apply to?” “How many interviews should I attend?” “Where am I even competitive to match?”

With this educational series, AMSA and Thalamus are here to help answer these questions and make the process more approachable and easier to understand.

Register now and gain access to live and recorded sessions that take you step-by-step through the application process.

Date & Time TBD

This session will focus on a broad overview of the residency application process, starting with application to the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), continuing with the interview season and then finally Match Day through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) (and SF Match and the AUA Match). There will be specific emphasis placed on the unique circumstances resulting from COVID-19 and its effects on the residency application process.

Date & Time TBD

Application to residency can be complicated, costly, and emotionally draining. This session centers on putting together your application strategy and avoiding costly pitfalls and misinformation. We will discuss optimizing your match versus collecting the largest number of interviews. We will review common misconceptions to try and alleviate over-application using historical data and analytics, and formulate surefire strategies to prepare oneself for the entirety of the application process through the Match. Also, unique considerations surrounding the virtual process for 2020-2021 will be discussed in detail.

Date & Time TBD

Now that you have applied to residency and likely received a few interview invitations (and possibly attended a few interviews depending on specialty), this session explores all items regarding the residency interview itself. For 2020-2021 we will describe in detail strategies to master the virtual interview and what to expect on interview day. We will also work to make you an expert interviewee, so that you can impress at your top choice program and beyond.

Date & Time TBD

As the interview season winds down, it is now time to begin formulating your rank-order list with the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Who knew creating a list of hospital names could be so challenging? This session will explore what to focus on, the rules of “The Match,” and other logistics regarding this most critical component of the application process.

Date & Time TBD

All the hard work is done, but the anxiety is starting to build. Very shortly, you will find out where you matched and will spend your time in residency. This session will focus on Match Day (and Match Week) and the sequence of events surrounding it, including what to do if you don’t match at your top choice and/or if you don’t match at all. We will discuss how to best be prepared for Match Day activities including managing family expectations, avoiding pitfalls, and taking time for yourself to celebrate a momentous achievement whether in-person or virtual.

Date & Time TBD

After Match Day, the process of transitioning to residency officially begins. This session will highlight relocating for residency, getting settled in your new surroundings, etiquette for interacting with your new program and other strategies to promote the best possible transition into your training years. We will focus on the events leading up to graduation and taking time to enjoy life outside of medicine, and then move on to being fully prepared for the start of intern year.
